A tinny rattle comes from the rear of the car as the engine settles to idle. Raise the engine speed slightly, and it disappears. The muffler looks solid, the tailpipe hasn't become noticeably louder, and there isn't a visible hole to explain the noise. An outside look only shows the shell. Before replacing it, you need to separate the sound from loose shields, hangers, nearby body panels, and parts inside the exhaust. A rattle that seems centered on the muffler can come from more than one place, particularly when the exhaust carries vibration along its length. The Muffler Has Parts Inside Its Outer Case Many mufflers contain chambers, tubes, and internal partitions that alter exhaust sound. These pieces are secured inside the shell. If an internal attachment breaks or corrosion weakens a partition, a piece can vibrate even though the outer case still contains the exhaust gases.
